Ppp For Mac

Ppp

THE BIG MAC index was invented by The Economist in 1986 as a lighthearted guide to whether currencies are at their “correct” level. It is based on the theory of purchasing-power parity (PPP), the notion that in the long run exchange rates should move towards the rate that would equalise the prices of an identical basket of goods and services (in this case, a burger) in any two countries.

Burgernomics was never intended as a precise gauge of currency misalignment, merely a tool to make exchange-rate theory more digestible. Yet the Big Mac index has become a global standard, included in several economic textbooks and the subject of dozens of academic studies. For those who take their fast food more seriously, we also calculate a gourmet version of the index for 55 countries plus the euro area.

The setup assistant will not guide you to configure PPPoE connections when you set up a new MacBook or Mac Mini. Big Mac PPP A measure of purchasing power parity that observes the price of a Big Mac in a given country relative to the price of a Big Mac in the United States, with a goal of determining the real value of a currency. Purchasing power parity is a theory stating that the same good or service costs the same amount regardless of the currency in which it. The GDP-adjusted index addresses the criticism that you would expect average burger prices to be cheaper in poor countries than in rich ones because labour costs are lower. PPP signals where exchange rates should be heading in the long run, as a country like China gets richer, but it says little about today's equilibrium rate. The relationship between prices and GDP per person may be a better guide to the current fair value of a currency.

'error initializing serial port - possibly already in use'

Ppp For Mac Shortcut

This error indicates that either some other program is using theserial port, or your Macintosh thinks there is. A serial port iseither the modem port or printer port where you can plugyour modem into the computer.

If another application is using the serial port to which the modem isconnected, PPP will give the above error. You must be sure thatno applications are running that use the modem port. Also, you mustensure that no damaged or conflicting software is causing your systemto think the modem port is in use. To troubleshoot the problem:

Ppp For Mac Software

  1. Quit any active applications. In the System Folder, check your Startup Items folder. Items in this folderautomatically launch every time you restart your computer. They maybe taking control of your serial port (especially if they are fax orvoice messaging programs), so you may wish to empty this folder.
  2. Restart your computer, and try to use PPP again. Occasionally, applications that access the serial ports will not release control ofthem even when they are terminated. By restarting, you clear theremains of the program from the memory and reset the serial port.
  3. If you have a PowerBook and are using a PC card modem, see ARCHIVED: If I have a PowerBook with a PC card modem, what should I do when PPPsays that my serial port is busy?
  4. Whenever possible, plug your modem into your Mac's modem port(indicated by a telephone icon). If you must use your printer port orif you only have a single modem/printer port, you will need todisable AppleTalk. To do this, from the Apple menu, selectChooser. In the bottom right of the Chooserwindow, to the right of AppleTalk, click Inactive.
  5. Disable any extensions or control panels that may be accessing theserial port. For best results, disable everything not involved withPPP, MacTCP, TCP/IP, or the basic operation ofyour modem. See ARCHIVED: In Mac OS, how do I disable specific control panels and extensions? Be sure to disable all fax and voicemessaging software.

For Global Village modems, files containing the words 'TelePort','PowerPort', or 'Global' must be left active. The 'Global Fax'extension, however, must be disabled.

For the Apple GeoPort Telecom Adapter, leave files activethat contain the words 'GeoPort' or 'Express'.

For other modems, see the documentation that came with the modem todetermine what software is necessary for its basic operation.

Now restart your computer, and try running PPP again.

  6. Rebuild the desktop, zap the PRAM, and run Disk First Aid onyour computer. For information about how to do this, see ARCHIVED: On a Mac OS or Mac OS X computer, how do I rebuild the desktop, andwhy would I want to?, About the PRAM and NVRAM in macOS, and ARCHIVED: In the Mac OS X Disk Utility, what is the First Aid function, and whenand how should I use it?

Then try your PPP software again.

  7. Finally, if you still encounter the same problem, do a cleanreinstall of your Macintosh's operating system. For more information, see ARCHIVED: In Mac OS 9.x and earlier, what is a clean system install, and how canI do it? Once you haveinstalled the operating system, you must also reinstall your PPPsoftware, as well as any software necessary for the modem to function.

Note: Do not reinstall fax or voicemessaging software.
